View Full Version : Ticking Noise

I can hear a little ticking noise in my engine at idle and I asked some people what it may be. They told me that it's the valves and to fix it dump a quart of the red ATX fluid into the oil and then drain the engine immediately. Then add a quart of oil and then drain it to flush the ATX fluid out. They said that since it's a detergent and thinner than oil, it will get into the more tight places than oil and get rid of the ticking. Do you people agree/disagree with this??

Some say if you use thinning oil (smaller number) it will make less noise. I use 5w30 in the summer and 0w30 in the winter.

atx hmm i woulnt do that. ive herd of people doing that, and some people swear by it but if you want to clean it out go by some cleaner. i dont really like that stuff either. i think if you 5w30 mobil one royal purple etc. youll be just fine. i used to clean out my engine regulary then it started knocking loud. then i was going down the freeway and i herd a loud noise. tire screched for a sec, i pressed the clutch in and rolled to the side. its dead.

if you use a good synth oil and change it regularly you will have no ticking. the sound you here is the HLA's pumping up as your oil gets dirty it slows this process so what you hear is the hlas trying to fill back up and it takes longer with dirty oil.
Its also a good idea to use a good filter so the cange intervil is longer I change mine around every 5000 or so just when my hlas start making noise again.
and almost all 2.5's will make that noise on startup and after the oil warms it should go away (clean warm oil)

Also.....just about everyone (including me) would suggest you use mobil 1 trisynthetic. Get it at walmart. It's cheap. And buying 6 quarts in the box is the same as buying 6 individual ones at walmart. So you don't need 6. Just get 5.

So does Mobil 1 get rid of a lot of the engine noise? Right now I use Castrol GTX. I've been told by many people that as long as you change your oil every 3000 miles, synthetic isn't that important.

Mobil 1 is a lot better than castrol.

If i was going to do a change to synthetic, do you think I should let the old stuff drain out a little longer? Right now I let it drain for about 30 minutes when there is a drip maybe every 5 or 10 seconds.

I see you go to Wal*Mart too for your oil. They seem to always have to best prices.

what type of oil filters do all of you use???

I got a mobil one filter that I ordered from thier web site (you can't find any at stores around here) even the Kmart in shakapee (which carries mobil 1 filters) doesn't have the one the probe needs. It was $10 so I don't know if I'll get it next time I need to replace it. Also...How often do you change your filter? Last time I changed my oil I just took off the filter and drained it and put it back on. I think next time I will change it.

Last time I was at the KMart in Minnetonka they had a place on the shelf for the Mobil 1 filter for our car but it was out. I change the filter every time I change the oil. I havent heard of re-using the oil filter before. The filter elements will be dirty and the new oil would probably get dirty pretty quickly. I don't know why, but dark oil bugs me (yeah, and im using castrol gtx, a dark oil) i change it when it gets dark (about 2500-3000 miles on my car)

i change my oil every 2k miles and sometimes i let the filter go until about 4k... i use an oil that my dad gets for me... i guess it's some of the best stuff that you can use in your car but it's not on the market for consumers... oh well, i get it anyway...

Yeah most people change their filter every 3rd oil change I think. The first time I changed the oil I got the motorcraft one from ford and it was $7.....what a rip off.....

change your filter every time you change you oil. think about it you wouln't take a shower and put on dirty smelly underware would you? filter is the most important part. i use purelator pure 1 filter its the highest rated one one the market and it cost like $5. mobil one oil or royal purple. run a search one pt about castrol gtx if you do youll never use it again.

FROM PROBE TALK!
Note on Castrol Syntec/Magnatec
o This oil is not good for engines.
o Recently reformulated and isn't a real
synth, despite what Castrol may say.
o The GTX product and RS products are fine
(but ensure RS is in 0w30/0w40 not 10w60).

Syntec/Magnatec:
o Forms ash deposits on valves
o Additive pkge sludges in engine & bottle!
o Draining sees black-flakes which are a wax
and additive coming out of suspension.

This has been seen in Mazda, Audi, BMW.
Both turbo & non-turbo cars, UK & US cars.

Is this the message on PT that you were talking about?? It says that it is the synthetic castrol that is bad and the "GTX product and RS products are fine" Or did I miss the right post?

so bottom line change your oil every 3,000 miles and use mobil 1 and change the filter every oil change...right...ok....

You don't have to change your filter every time, but what you just said is probably the absolute best you could do. I just don't like buying a $10 filter every time.

Aside from lifter tick, there's carbon knock and the little friction gear washer as well.

The carbon knock can come from the valve heads and piston tops being a little dirty. A good intake cleaner (made for fuel injected) can do it, I can explain how if you need. It's easy. Goes down the throttle body.

The friction spring is a bent washer that takes up gear lash noise, on the 93 and 94 it's too weak at low RPM's. Only solution there is to replace it, which involves pulling the rear cams... not fun.
