View Full Version : Now taking odds on what will break on my 93 PGT next

I just bought a 93 PGT to replace my first gen GL... god bless its soul. As much as I love the new Probe, it's killin' me. I bought it with some slop in the clutch, knew it would need to be replaced soon. It went the next day, but not before the alternator belt snapped. As soon as I got a new belt in, I took it for a drive... and it threw the new belt. The next one stayed on long enough to drive it home from the transmission shop (in Chicago, where I bought the car) and up to Minneapolis, after doing the brakes, replacing two rotors and the famed 1993 GT rear caliper.
Eventually, I traced the belt problems to the harmonic balancer - specifically, it being in two pieces (one of which fell on me when I took a look at the crank from underneath). So, I pulled one from a junkyard, and since I have no tools in Minneapolis (all are in Chicago, my pre-college home), I got a local wrench to toss it in for me today at a reasonable price. As I'm driving from work to the mechanic, I notice a sound coming from the front right of the car that sounds depressingly like a bad CV joint, which I could take care of myself, given some time and tools, neither or which I have.
Does someone have some voodoo spell that will let me drive the car for just one week without worrying about what will fall off next?

If i had to make a bet, I go with the disty..... err maybe VC gaskets..... ooooor the disty... sorry had to man, i know how you feel, im on my 2nd 93 GT right now. Eventually you will have replaced most everything, as i did, and it will run wonderfully.... good luck

I'm taking 2:1 on the disty, 4:1 on the valve cover gaskets and 7:1 on the rotors.

I'm shootin' for the Distributor cap and rotor too, but VC gaskets are bound to go too.

cap and rotor for sure, pull your plug wires and check the wells for oil too. tell tale sign of the vc gasket

Ahh, the great engineering minds of Ford.

$50 says Valve Cover Gasket has been leaking for long before you bought the car and your plug wells have pools of oil in them just waiting to be discovered.

You have HLA tick up the wazoo too, but that's not critical.

The valve seals are shot and she probably is down on compression too = a little smoke out the tail at hard throttle, but not enough to notice most of the time.

I hope you did the water pump when you did the timing belt....

And those rear calipers will need to be serviced (read replaced) again next spring.

But yes, generally, I'd have to say the best odds are that the disty will leave you stranded any day now.

 Probes fucking ROCK.

Why would they need to be replaced again? I replaced them with a pair of '95s. The problem was fixed by then, wasn't it?

The problem was never fixed as far as I know... But I could be wrong...
