well my roommate's millenia has developed a serious noise coming from what i believe to be the rear head, probably the center cylinder, but the noise quiets at about 2300rpm, but gets louder again above that

i think the lifters may be sticking, anyway to verify this without taking everything apart? or should i just drop another engine in? might be cheaper no?

then it begs the question, what are the differences between a 01 kl engine and an older 97ish kl engine?

The newer engines have solid lifters, unlike the older engines have the hydraulic lifters.

Make sure to check the Timing belt tensioner. Those are common to go, and when they do they can cause a knock type of sound. Its also located towards the back head.

Other wise it is a rod, probably number 6 to.
