so about a week ago i bought a 98 dodge neon sport. 2.0L DOHC. ive ported and polished the intake. it has a bigger throttle body. new cold air intake. altezza tail lights. and i just threw the rims off of the probe on it to see how it looks lol... what do ya think?
and i wont be leaving these on during winter

does that engine have the single cam or the double? we own one of each. one is a 95 green neon with the single and a 98 expresso with the double cam. both are very slow in my opinion. the auto transmissions are so bad in those. no balls like that honda element i test drove today.

5 speed. i am a rookie still so its a toss up. manual would definitely win but i am not good enough to get its fullest potential.
if you ever drove a neon with an auto, they are SLOW

DOHC, 99 R/T computer, Short Shift, P&P intake on the head and manifold. Red modern performance 60mm TB. Crane Cams, Cold Air Intake, EGR block off, and ha! um let me see. ford probe se less hp and more weight than my neon.. do the math.

i get better gas milage :) haha but seriously its just a winter beater.. and a car to have some fun with. now i can work on a car and let it sit being apart while i have my other one to drive to work and back. but this winter nothing will happen to the neon unless its like 2 hours tops to do it.
i take some pride it making a car what it is. but thats me

i didn't realize you put all the performance stuff in the neon already. if it was stock, i would probably win. you still didn't answer me if its a single or double cam. looks like a single by the looks of that valve cover.

Ive driven them both, and MTX vs MTX, and ATX vs ATX, its all a toss-up.
My roomate has a MTX base model Probe with every bolt-on, and it's still slow. I think my Escort would take it stock still:lol:

Doubt it. With those mods I bet you get ~35mpg highway, which is around what his G35 gets.

And you are forgetting the little thing called gearing. The Probe is geared great for off the line, where the Neon isnt as much (WHich is why the Neon gets 10+mpg than the Probe does). The Probe would pull right off the line thru 1st, then the Neon would catch it. Been there, done that. Still all depends on the driver and the suspension setup, driver weight, amount of gas,etc etc etc. Plus that huge TB Id wager just kills your low-end torque. That weight advantage can be nullified pretty quickly.
The 1/4 miles times from the 2 arent that far off stock for stock.
Those damn neons and their weight. If they weighed 3200lbs like normal cars they wouldn't be fast.
The 300lbs it has on the Probe doesnt seem too shabby, eh?
How much did the beater run you price-wise?

it doesn't really look like a beater, infact it looks pretty good for what it is.
neons are in the same pricing category as probes. $200-$2500

first gear in the neon has nothing but torque, revs out quick. second gear is where it takes off and will go to 60mph before the rpms get too high. and i know a lot depends on the specifics of everything for the race. but as far as number's go, the neon is lookin better for the win.
and it cost me 1100. came with the throttle body, ecu, short shift, egr block off kit and thats it. the porting of the head cost me like 7 bucks for the gasket and thats it, spent maybe 5 hours pulling it apart and doing the work, then putting it back together.
im going to put the egr system back in as soon as i find one in a junk yard. i dont know if it hurts or helps the performance so im putting that back where it should be.
the last neon i had was all stock except the iceman intake and tha still only got 36mpg. but how much a tank gets me doesnt bother me anymore. i get what i get.

how do the standard gearboxes compare to the autos they put in those? ours are both autos and i think regardless of the engine size they are slow as fuck with an auto in them.

manual is way different than the auto. back in high school i raced an auto 2.0L vs my manual. walked away from it as soon as i hit second gear. first gear i was just pullin away slowly. but its the same as any other car with auto or manual for the most part. i raced my buddy in his auto pgt and killed him lol

Try 20-30% for an auto. Manual is closer to 15%. And autos are geared like shit. Try driving an ATX Probe and then an MTX. Night and day difference in power.

Well what the hell! Tell him to finish that damn car.. My build plans have been postponed Until next winter... But I am Pulling the car apart this winter to fix the blown up clutch and find out why it was running so rich and only put down a very embarrassing 271RWHP and 295RWTQ.. Get me up to my 315-330WHP and 350-365WTQ I should be at..
I figure the extra 40 horsepower I'm missing and will have should feel like I've done more work to the damn thing.. That and I'm going to shed a few pounds.
