View Full Version : selling a car with a new motor question

Alright, so Infiniti just installed a new motor (long block) on my G because there was an oil consumption issue with the car. My question is if I wanted to sell the car now, how much more do you guys think I could I ask on the selling price than what it would otherwise fetch? The install was done and documented by an Inifniti dealer and all service records for the vehicle are recorded with them involving the issue. I still also have 10k miles/6 months worth of original warranty left plus another 2 years/40k miles extended after that. It's an 06 G35 coupe with 50k on odometer.

+ $3000-4000 ??????
figure the hourly rate of the dealershit and the cost of the long block and just add it to the existing value.
technically you can say the motor is brand new minus what ever miles you put on it already

Well...I guess that formula would only realistically work if I was adding that cost on top of a car with no motor vs. a car with a running motor with miles on it. However, your amount might be in the ball park of what I was thinking though. I think the dealership billed Inifiniti almost 10 thousand for parts/labor but I obviously couldn't tack that much onto the market price and expect it to sell.

My best guess would be maybe 1,500 to a few grand more? Though with things like that you might not even get anymore for it, Sometimes that type of thing can scare people.

yeah it's kind of like a warning sign. I wouldn't pay extra for it.

^^Bingo. A lot of people will wonder what caused the engine to break, and then also wonder if the whole car is a lemon, and after buying it something else would break...
Though if the warranty is from the dealership and is transferrable, I would still buy iy. Not like it's from MNSC and some kid slapped a new B16 into his Civic saying it's "new"

The engine wasn't broke...it was a design flaw for the revup motor that affected about 15% of all the 6mt VQ cars. I would also think that anything potentially oil related would have been replaced or addressed in an entire engine swap. This particular oil issue was something that was potentially a problem for ALL 05.5-07 6mt VQ motors so if they're looking for my car or a 350Z, it would have potentially been a problem. It was fixed under a technical service bulletin put out by Nissan and Inifiniti. I would think that under those circumstances, anyone looking at it as a warning sign and avoiding it for that reason would be based more on mental mindset than logical reason. I've read on the boards that Inifiniti/Nissan is very selective and restrictive on what they'll approve so there are many cars that have the issue and don't get replaced.

Well if you are going to try and sell the car be sure to put that information in. Would put a lot of people at ease.

Well I'll probably get something interim to get by but I'll hope to land another "G" from the Nissan family as in "G"TR  In a couple years, a used 08 should be in the mid 40's to low 50's and I'll have saved probably a good 15k in car payments alone to bring that number to a manageable amount.

What are you going to drive in the interim years? The Probe?

Nah...I'll probably sell the probe and everything for it and get something newer and more reliable.
I would pay less.
I hope to but we'll see how much they depreciate

Oh  That's what we were talking about. But why would you pay less for a car with a new motor given the situation I've already stated? I could understand avoiding that car in general for the potential flaw in engineering but choosing a different one (same car) won't resolve the problem

Newer and more reliable...yes, but I hate the idea of paying 2500 dollars a year just to have it sit during the winter. Just seems so impractical and wasteful  But if I don't sell it, I won't be devastated either.

If they would've made a G35X coupe I would have gotten it but they only offered AWD on the sedan models until the new G37X coupe out this year -which is around $38,000 :( I might consider getting a an 07 35X sedan though considering it's 4 doors, has a bigger trunk, weighs less and is faster in 5at model than my 6mt coupe-figure that one out!

Odd, I thought I saw somewhere in 06 that the coupes had come with AWD, but only in automatic. Must have been the sedans I was thinking of.
Just get an FX. Just as fast, AWD, and plenty of room:D

I'd much rather save for an R35. I'd probably consider buying an older rex for the interim.
