hey ya'l...been a while since i've been on here...got a few questions i was hoping someone could answer or give me some insight on!
I'm looking at buying a 98-01 Ford F-150. options are:
A. 5.4 automatic Triton V8
B. 4.6 automatic Triton V8
C. 4.6 manual 5 speed Triton V8
the question is pretty simple...which one would ya'l recommend for towing? nothing to heavy mainly dirtbikes and at most 4 sleds on a trailer and one in the bed. i know the obvious answer is the 5.4 but I'm wondering if anyone has owned or drove or even has an opinion on the 4.6 manual...I'm looking around a lot and seeing a TON of the 4.6 manuals but cant seem to find any good info on em or personal opinions especially about towing..

i would recommend getting one with the 5 speed. ford has a problem with a combination of both automatic transmissions and towing.
either of the engines are fair. 4.6 should be plenty. i personally haven't seen one in the shop in a while other then oil changes or tires. seem to hold up well.
my brother has a Auto 99 F150XLT 5.4 triton. hes got 280K miles and still running. a crack in the head, the "P" does NOT work.. so he has to find a spot so it doesnt roll and set parking brake.
it runs rough but its still running. he'd go any where with it... now he bought a Ford Escape, so now hes just using it as a farm/hunting truck.

probably the easiest oil filter change ever on these things. just reach under the drivers side part of the bumper to unscrew it

No, 4.3L V6 on 90's S-10's are the easiest.

So true. I don't even hate doing oil changes on the winter truck other then the fact that i'm putting money into a beater.

damn you like those? i thought it was stupid that it is up near the light on the drivers side.

It's actually right under the radiator, You pop open a little door and it's right up front there.
what about those Inline jeep motors? i think its stupid they have the filter where you loosen the filter and spills oil all over the exhaust on the way down.

what one has the filter up by the light with all this extra hosing? i know they are on the blazers and jimmys.

yah i don't know why jeep did that. i know what your talking about though on the rear passenger side of the engine.
actually i take that back, the oil filter under the bumper is fairly easy but doing a filter on one of the newer bmw models from top of the engine is so effortless. i think its just a 22mm socket that removes a plastic cover and the filter just lifts out. so easy a cave man can do it

So basically you would have trouble doing it?

don't know what one you are talking about, i only remember the ones up on top of the engine. you are probably thinking of some stupid vw or 3.1 or 3.8 chevy car engine

Nope, the 4.3. I'll snap a picture later if I think about it. And the 3.8 gm is actually a pretty decent motor. *GM owner aside*

Yeah it was on the newer blazers with the plastic shrowd. Not too bad but there are easier like BMW's and Mercedes on the top part of the engine bay.

3.8 is a beast and I love fords. Those 3800 series motors take a beating and always keep coming for more. Only bad thing is the plastic upper intake manifold breaking and antifreeze pouring into the engine.

what years are you talking about? the early 90's had the ones up top with all the extra shit, i think the late 90's are underneith somewhere. somebody has to get their shit straight

Its more than pretty decent, its one of the only 2 V6's that GM has ever done right, the other being the 4.3L. Aside from the SBC's, they're the only motors that would be in a GM that I would purchase (and just happen to be). Im not even a GM fanboy and I love them. The rest of the car that the motor is in.. not so much on any of the models. The car and tranny falls apart long before the motor will.

The lower intake manifold gaskets are an issue on every GM V6 also. Ours doesnt even have an upper intake manifold (S/C FTW) and I have to replace the lower gaskets now:mad: Car hasnt even hit 100k yet. Gay.

I know they had it there all the way up to 97, I think. My dad's 94 and 95 has it there...

I can't believe I am saying this but you are right as the early 90's blazers are on top. The late 90's is what he is refering to with the plastic shroud. It takes a flathead to open up the flap the the filter sit right there. I hated do these at the shop because for one thing oil goes down the plastic shroud towards the subframe and even if you breakcleaned the hell outta it will still leave a few oil drops on the owners garage floor unless you took the extra couple minutes and cleaned it extremely well while scratching your arms up.

Well the s/c is awesome on those motors but that will suck doing the lower mani gaskets with all the s/c stuff there.

gm has always put too much shit in the way that there is no way of getting around spilling oil on everything. alot of the early 2000's suburbans and 1500's with the 5.3? you gotta use a piece of cardboard to funnel the oil away from the subframe. really stupid if you ask me

It's 10x easier to remove the few SC things than it is to remove an actual upper intake manifold.

someone showed up at my work a couple summers ago with a 97 chevy malibu with the 3.1
i kid you not, it only had a half quart of oil in it. when i put new oil and filter on it it sounded bad but it was their fault. half a fucking quart is like 2 oil filters full on one of them!

I know that the 2.2 liter Chevy motors are in a stupid place at an angle directly over the exhaust pipe also.
