View Full Version : Bleeder Screw Snapped Off

So my bleeder screw snapped off right at the point of the caliper. I'm pissed about it but at least it's still sealed. Anyway, does anybody know if it's possible to bleed without using the bleeder screw? I did the other three successfully so I may just live without doing this one since it's just a rear...

if you got stainless steel lines can't you just untigthten the nut? I guess I really shouldn't post anything because I am guessing but just throwin it out there....
or maybe just drill the whole thing out...

get a dremel and cut a flat head into the head carefully..use a screwdriver and back that old screw out, go buy a new one, there only a few bucks...as far as i know i've never heard of a way to bleed without using the bleed screw...i broke my bleed screw off on my sable last year and had to replace the whole caliper...

you can actually bleed the line by loosening the bango bolt that goes into the caliper its not the best way but it usually works.

You can go to Napa or Red Rooster. They have a fitting for this same issue. I had to do it on my first car. You drill the old screw out bigger than it was before and you thread in a new fitting that a bleeder screw screws into.
Here is what I am talking about.

probably could get away with loosening the brake line and do the pump the pedal routine a few times and just guess.

I really don't think this would work because by using some vinyl tubing on the bleeder screw you're preventing air from being sucked back into the caliper.

You would bleed it the same way u would with the blender screw. Pump the brakes up then loosen the banjo bolt then tighten it then do it until the brakes feel good.

Who ever uses tubing on the end of the bleeder?
Keeping the brake depressed until the screw is re-tightened is the only thing that keeps the air from being forced back into the cylinder...

Make sure that you use the correct drill size also otherwise if you use one that is too big (only takes a couple thousandths) the new bleeder won't seal right. IF you go this route, make sure that you back flush the caliper so none of the metal shavings get caught in the caliper and cause a boot puncture or wreak any other havoc. Basically you are looking at a complete caliper rebuild. Best bet, spend $71.99 and go buy a new caliper.
Here is what I would do: soak the hell out of the bleeder with a "bust rust" product, not WD-40. Next, find a star bit and a drill bit that is a little bit smaller than the star bit. Drill the bleeder screw approximately 3/16", to 1/2 inch deep. Take the star bit, tap the bit into the drilled hole with a hammer until it is bottomed out. Place a socket on the star bit, and turn out with appropriate ratchet. I have dealt with this kind of thing a million times as a machinist. It works every time. And the tapping from the hammer usually helps break up the rust in the threads of the bleeder. :D

or you could say to hell with it and crimp the brake line shut

i would leave it alone, if you can deal.. otherwise if its stuck shut like that, i would say pull the caliper off, and try to extract the screw, however its possible that its rusted shut and its just a lost cause... post a pic

You. If you're going to call someone an idiot, make sure you don't make yourself look like one in the process.
You talking shit about Dave is so funny in so many different ways... mainly because I wouldn't trust him OR you to fix a sandwich.... fucking people thinking they know everything about cars because they fetch parts for people at AutoZone... what a joke.
Dave, i went to college for Diesel/Automotive Tech, you did not, perhaps i could TEACH you things you NEVER knew..
