alright so im going to be getting the tranny taken out and geting a new clutch and flywheel for it. which is all good. but i heard from a friend i dont kno if it is the same with our cars but in front wheel drive one wheel is pulling the car so around 30 mph then both wheels kick in and are pulling the car. he told me i can get this thing for it so both wheels are pulling the car all the time but i dont kno what it is and he said its easy to do y the tranny is out. so im trying to look into it and have no idea what it really is?
think it would help? or does our cars 2 wheel drive like all the time? hmm

Your friend is talking about a limited slip differential. I'm at work on my break, so I need to go now. I'll post more info later on tonight.

The whole "30mph" thing is :bs: though.

Our cars have an open differential, which some people call "1 wheel drive"

The thing is, if you stopped one wheel from turning, the other wheel would still spin just as freely as before. Also, if one wheel slips and starts spinning faster than the car is moving, the other wheel either spins less or does not spin at all.

A limited slip differential prevents this by making sure power is given to both wheels at all times. It is limited, because you want it to be able to allow each wheel to spin independantly. This is because one wheel spins faster than the other while turning. There are 3 types of limited slip differentials that I know of. There is a viscous that uses some fluid or something. I don't really know much about it. Then there is a quaiff style that uses a lot of gears achieve a limited slip differential. It's very complicated, but they do make them for probes. they are around $1300 I think. Then there is the more common (and cheaper) clutch type LSD that just uses friction to prevent slipping, while still allowing it. These wear out over time. There is also some product called the "phantom grip" that acts like and LSD by exerting a lot of force on the spider gears of the differential. This is cheap ($300 I think) but it seems kind of rough on the differential. I don't consider this a real LSD, but you get the same effect.

A locked differential would not allow any difference between wheels and this would make it very hard to turn. I've heard of people welding their differential gears together so both wheels have power at all times. This is really only done for drag racing, because it pretty much makes turning impossible.

not the best choice, but definitely the cheapest. You have to modify the spider gears to make it fit right. Not fun.

Here is pretty much what you would have to do:

wow that awesome
it seems like fun now i think you got me into doing it myself
i think i will pull the tranny and put in the cm stage 1 new fly wheel and the PG
if you have anything in that kind of detail on how to take off and put back on the tranny that would help as well

where do you get a probe gt repair cd? it sounds like it could be a bit helpfull

I've got one, gimme a cd and I'll burn it for anyone. It is specifically for the 93-94 models and actually all 93-4 model ford cars but even for the newer years I'm sure the basics are the same

They're not that hard to get off. Try WD-40. Just don't put them on too tight, or you'll do what I did and break the bolt. They are weak on purpose because you don't want to strip anything.

btw, there is an edit button so you can edit your own posts.

it's a long thin white plastic clip right on top of the transmission. It's held on by one of the transmission mount bolts.

as far as I know its a reverse light sensor, thats what I was told and I think it says it in the book, its the sensor on the front bottom of the tranny right? if it is I'm pretty sure thats what it is
but of course correct me if I'm wrong
