I changed to Mobil 1 2000 miles ago and the oil looks fine. Every once and a while when I start the car there is a definate tap, tap, tap until I rev it and it fades out. Is this HLA tap? The oil is looking fine on the dipstick and under the oil filler cap. Do you guys think I should change my oil? Or what else can I do. This doesnt happen very often, maybe one a week.

it's probably the hla's cause they always tick... you could change your oil or... your oil pump... that would fix it for sure... :D

that site pretty much says to change your oil. the weird thing is that i never had hla tick b4 and people have told me mobil one will cure/prevent it. so i put in mobil one in and 2000 miles later i've got hla tick.

the thing is that you need to change the a few times just to help clense the engine so change it now and again in like 2000 more miles and then the ticking should be gone for good
I have like 5000 on my last mobil 1 change and no ticking

yeah, that might be what it is. Isnt Mobil 1 a detergent? Its probably dirty from cleaning all the castrol out and its getting in the hla's. The oil on the dipstick isn't black or dirty though.

Do you think it would be a good idea for me to start using Mobil 1?

Eric- that ticking you heard from my car, is it the hla's???

on higher mileage cars that have never run mobil 1 can form oil leaks. I took that chance though. That ticking in your engine isnt the hla's, just sounds from the belt i think.

If you do change to mobil 1, at least goto valley and get three oil filters for the oilchange card that I sold you and use the rest of the stuff.

well actually the leaks that are assosiated with mobil or other synth oils is from going back to standard oils
you see the seals around moving parts seam to shrink when exposed to a natural oil after be exposed to synth

i wasn't going insane when i said to replace your oil pump....

i found this on PT today...

The ticking may be your lifters tapping due to air in the oil, caused
by a worn oil pump. This is a common problem on Probes. Search this forum for "HLA", you'll find
lots of info. The ticking could also be caused by other sources, such as low oil pressure, clogged
oil passages, or worn valve train components. Or the ticking could be coming from another source:
among other things, injectors make a ticking sound sometimes. Listen closely to your engine and
see if you can locate the source of the noise.

I just disagreed with you because you said it was "the lifters in the oil pump". There are no lifters in the pump itself.... is there? But if you pump is crappy then your lifters are going to suffer.
