View Full Version : New idea for Ben's tranny brace...

Found these pics. Aparently the brace was made in two seperate pieces to allow for fitment regardless of how much it's stretched already. Using Grade 8 bolts and the proper torque would allow the two pieces to become one without welding. The lower part is inset (as apposed to the CZT brace) which will allow more clearance to the exhaust. Also...there is a chance these would fit the 2.0L.

I thought that this idea for a trans brace would work pretty good too. My technical aptitude can confirm the ability of the bolts to hold. It won't be quite as strong as a weld (depending on the type and size of weld), but by using Grade 8 bolts you should be able to put a high enough preload to insure that the two parts will not come apart or slide on each other. If you decide to build one of these, crank the hell out of the bolts when you install it. Unless you are using a huge breaker bar, you shouldn't be able to torque them too much. I would use a washer on each bolt if space allowed as well.

Well I made one, something like this but instead of bolting it together I welded the two pieces together. (it was a bitch making)
I also didn't include the middle bolt where the shift linkage attaches. It seemed unneccissary to me as that would be a weak link anyway. I'll try to get some pics and make some others up soon.
