View Full Version : Looking at Spun ZE Tomorrow -> What to Look For?

I am taking a look at a KL-ZE that spun a rod bearing, we will most likely pull it apart, what should I look for (scuffing on the crank?)... anything else while I'm down there? The bottom end is like the 03, I think. What wears in those? I guess I could check the cylinder walls... Any clearance issues I should look for. The owner, Mike Hughes, says that ZE's are notorious for poor cranks, any answers to that one? Spose I should pull off the VCG's too, huh? What else to look for? KL-31 on the heads... the infamous ZE long neck manifold...

Thanks for your ideas!

i think ben said something like it might be prone to valve floating...

That's prolly Dave's old engine, He put a 150 shot at Rock Falls earlier this summer. The car ran an 11.8 but he eventually spun the bearing...

Mike says that it was Dave's engine. He said he didn't know anything about NOS though. When was that rock falls run, and when did he pull that motor? What else should I look for with a motor that ran NOS? The motor had a gunmetal pIs ainted valve cover and intake manifold. It also had ss headers, pheno spacers, and ngk wires. Can any one identify this as Dave's old motor? Is this motor still salvageable? Would anyone here run this motor after new bearings?

I'll confirm it as dave's engine, I saw him work on it all summer... There's nothing really wrong with the engine besides the bearing from what he told me. His mx6 was pretty tight too!! sweet car.

Yeah? should I be worried about the NOS that was ran through this car? If the crank shows wear I'll be replacing all the bearings, most likely get a new crank. If I install a used crank, does it need to be polished up?
