View Full Version : An Engine Question

I posted this same thing on PT and didn't get much of a reply.

I have the V6 and on the front right sparkplug hole (aboce the spark plug, not down in the combustion chamber) there is some oil  it sits at the bottom of the hole by the spark plug and it sort of coats the sides too. On PT, all they said is that it is common. I don't relly care if it's common, I just want to fix it :). Does anybody know what this might be?

It happens to everyone. :( The rear bank is a pain in the ass because you have to remove the intake manifold. The front one is not that hard.

Jeremy, mind helping me with mine??

you dont need anything except the first kit
thats what i ordered
the gasket it self is the only unreuseable part

Im probably asking stupid questions, but hey, its a way to get my post count up :) .

Anyway, If I need to replace the front and the rear valve cover gaskets, I would need to order two of the $35.00 gaskets listed above or is there a different gasket for the front and the rear. One last question, is there a gasket on the intake I would need to replace from having to take it off? Sorry, one more: Ford replaced my timing belt a month or two ago, would they have taken off my valve covers at all? I know, I sound like an idiot; but i trust you guys more than I would trust (almost) anybody @ PT.

what is it w/post counts???

you will need two gaskets.. i would check w/whoever you buy them from to find out if they are the same one or different (i obviously don't have a gt).

there should be a gasket on the intake that you to replace...

if they replaced your timing belt they would have to replace your vc gaskets on a 2.0. i'm not sure about a 2.5 tough. does it look like there is any wya to get @ your timing belt w/out removing the valve covers?

I have no idea, anybody else know?
It would be nice to blame the valve cover gaskets on Ford sevice dept. some how from when they replaced my timing belt. They screw up stuff all the time. On my old car they had to replace the engine mounts twice because of their errors. On my mom's car they cost us an oil pump (over $1000 repair) they wouldn't cover this though, the bitches. Oh yeah, they also said that the popping noise in the suspension was a bad ball joint. I went out and bought a new ball joint and had a friend fix it at his tech. college and when his teacher looked at it, there was nothing wrong with the ball joint. It is a strut mount I think.

Did you take yours to metropolitan ford? I took mine there to have the front brake pads changed. They couldn't even do that right. Now my brakes make a sound once per revolution and I can't figure out what it is. I took it back there and they wouldn't fix it.

Yeah, thats the place. They fuc*in suck at everything they do. I don't know why I still bring my car there.

QualityCare my ass! They should buy everybody new tires or somehting that they have done business with (since I need new tires :) )

But seriously, they screw everything up. And they are over priced

to change timming belt you dont need to take of valve covers. (on over head cam car shouldn't they be called cam covers?) i work at a parts store and ive never seen valve cover gaskets that didn't come as a set. (front/rear, left/right) for any probe owner who doesnt own a haynes manual buy one NOW. this thing is a life saver. haynes is better that chiltons but i have both any way. on the brakes they sqeak cause the pad is caught on the antirattle clip. if these things are not done exackly right sqeak happens. also you rotors are a little warped. what i did was file a little of the material away from aroung the area that the pads meet the clip. ebc pads dont work unless you do this. ebc pads smell sooo good after heavy breaking. burning kevlar yum!!

the kit will have both front and rear gaskets however if you do the rear(which i dont need to) then you will need the 110.00 kit due to the xtra gaskets for the intake portion then if you are doing that might as well h get phenos and/or port/polish the intake and ports.
I plan to extrude hone my klo3 intake this summer sometime ( i will be renting a sand blaster (this is how it is done) and do it in my garage prolly add the phenos too at that time

i got a sand blaster i think? michel (super probe) he said phenos were a wast of time?

it's seriously as eazy as taht?? just sandblast eh? is there the possibility of overdoing it? or does it just remove burrs and stuff to promote better flow???

well it just smooths every thing out i think when its professionaly done its actuly blasted in a swril pattern. i think?

i meant the sand is sprayed in a swril patern so it gets to all parts of the maifold

you can actuall take off lots of material too with a heavier grit sand then you go to a lighter grade as you finish

Racer X
03/21/2001, 02:44 AM
i think they make grits small enough to give a polished affect

you don't want that in an intake though do ya?

Racer X
03/21/2001, 09:05 AM
why not woulnt you want it as smooth as posssible

that's what i thought but i remember reading somewhere that having it that smooth could be bad...

domino
03/21/2001, 01:10 PM
theres advantages to both smooth and rough
smooth flows more freely
rough adds turbulance but mixes with fuel better

rebby

so we just want to find the best happy medium... :D

When you say extra gaskets for the intake portion, do you mean gaskets for the intake manifold plus the two for the front/rear valve covers and the grommets & insulators? Or do I need to buy a separate intake gasket?

My Haynes manual doesn't say a thing about grommets and insulators. Can someone tell me where exactly they go? In the instructions and pictures there is only the gasket. Bumper-To-Bumper told me they are the rings that go around the spark plug holes in the cover, this doesn't really seem right because the gasket goes all the way around and then over to the holes.

"Boundary layer"

It's why golf balls have dimples.

You actually want to catch a tiny bit of air on the surface - the rest of the air going past it has less friction against that trapped air than it does against the surface itself.

It's a long and confusing explanation, but you want to take out big obstructions, true, but mirror smooth is actually not good.

Also, I think the post count thing is for the avatar. It certainly can't imply brains!

*laughs

It was a potshot at some people in general on bulletin boards, not necessarily this one, but in general some people get hundreds or thousands of posts and still don't know anything and still dispense bad advice.

Didn't mean to sound like I was saying that about anyone here...
